When a new venture is growing it’s not just the business that is scaling but activities, decisions, choices and an all-around pull on a leader’s time. It’s important to have a mechanism that brings regular external perspective and support. This could be called a ‘growth board’ or ‘advisory board, and filled with people who will offer support. Their primary purpose is to advise on strategic direction, not to call the shots.
To help make it easier to ensure we covered everything, I developed a model for these meetings that conveniently spells ROCKET to drive the agenda of a growth board. This covers our Reason, Organisation and Culture, as well as KPIs, Expenses and Testing. I’ve found it helpful to break down these meetings into two separate sections. The first three agenda points cover ‘strategy and people’, while the second three elements cover ‘performance and projects’.
It’s important to focus the agenda of these growth boards in a way that genuinely helps the leadership team of this new venture and to avoid getting bogged down in reviewing lag metrics and financial reports that don’t particularly supercharge growth.
